Positive Guidance Policy

At Mamas Five Mile Childcare we believe that helping in shaping a child’s behaviour is an essential part of our role.  Child behaviour management will be positive and nurturing to the individual needs while perspectives of the children will be taken into account.  The boundaries for behaviour are made clear and are consistent so that children can feel secure, protected and happy in their environment.  Our policy will ensure that inappropriate behaviour is eliminated or re-occurrence is reduced. Appropriate behaviour will be acknowledged and recognised.  Positive guidance will prevent physical or emotional harm to the child.

Procedure

The strategies used for guiding behaviour are:

  • Re-direction of behaviour, that is, guide the child towards more appropriate activity.
  • Offer the child an explanation of why certain behaviour is unacceptable and inform the child of the desired behaviour.
  • Allow the child time to correct their behaviour, by empowering children to make appropriate choices using their problem-solving skills.
  • Teachers will guide children to make acceptable choices.
  • Teachers will talk in terms of the behaviour rather than the child while emphasising the positive.
  • A calm and peaceful manner will be used by the teachers when dealing with behaviour guidance issues.
  • Teachers and parents will work in partnership to individualise behaviour management plans where appropriate.
  • Mamas Childcare is a ‘no hitting zone’.  This applies to children, teachers, parents and visitors to the centre.
